How to partition the hard disk of Windows 10 and Windows 11 laptops?

Update Time: 2023-08-18 17:48:54

The default partition status of laptops with WIN10/WIN11 system:

1. Right-click on the Start button and select "Disk Management", you can see that if the notebook has M.2 SSD+HDD dual hard disk configuration, there will be the following default partition status. The disk 0 corresponding to the C drive is the M.2 solid-state hard disk, and the disk 1 is the mechanical hard disk.

Note: Usually, the standard M.2 solid-state hard disk of the model with dual hard disk configuration is not large in capacity, and can only meet the system installation purpose. Therefore, if the partition is to store personal files in an organized manner, it is recommended that you partition the mechanical hard disk.

2. If only a single hard disk is pre-installed, disk 0 is the only hard disk. Usually, in addition to the C disk system disk, there is also a D disk partition for data storage. If you want to partition, we recommend you to partition the D disk:

Note: Depending on the model, the partition status may be slightly different. Some models do not have a D disk, if you want to partition, you can only perform partition operation for a C disk, but the partition method is the same.

The specific operation method of partition:

Step 1. Right-click the Windows icon, then click Disk Management.

Please check if you have unallocated space on your computer disk. If you don't, follow our guide step-by-step. If you do, you can directly jump to Step 4 and continue.

Step 2. Right-click the hard disk partition that you want to shrink, and select "Shrink Volume".

Step 3. Enter the amount of space you want to shrink in MB, then click on the "Shrink" button.

Wait for the process to complete, you'll get an unallocated volume.

Note: The amount of shrunk space entered here is the size of the new partition to be divided, the unit is MB, 1G=1024MB, and the specific partition size to be divided can be calculated according to this.

Note: There is no uniform standard for the number and size of partitions, so it is necessary to divide them into several areas, and how much capacity is allocated to each area depends on the user's personal habits.

Step 4. Right-click on the unallocated space on your hard disk, and then select "New Simple Volume".

Step 5. In the New Simple Volume Wizard interface, click "Next".

Step 6. Enter the size of the volume you want to create in MB or accept the default size, and then select "Next".

Step 7. Accept the default drive letter or choose a different letter for the partition, and then select "Next".

Step 8. Set the default file system as NTFS and click "Next" to format the volume.

Step 9. Click "Finish" to complete creating a new partition in Windows 11/10.
